Hi Vicki - Thanks for your kind comments. I don't remember that there was much, if any, regard for the emotional side of stuttering when I was in therapy with the school SLP back in the 70's. I did re-engage with therapy briefly, at a local University clinic, a 2-3 years ago. I only went for a quarter or so - but most of that time was spent delving into both emotional issues and training me to identify what I'm doing physically when I stutter. It was good to see that the grad student therapists were addressing the emotional side, but it seemed to be a cookie-cutter approach. This is still far better than my last experience in my youth. Nice to see progress being made. I can't speak to what is happening in schools now - I just don't know. I believe everybody agrees that addressing the emotional side of stuttering is critical to the success of any therapy approach, but it is difficult as it requires the therapist to not only be skilled in SLP-topics but in counseling as well. And, since everybody is different, and has different needs, and different amounts of emotional baggage associated with their stuttering, it is not an easy proposition. Thanks! Joe
