Hi Shelley. Thanks for you comments, and good questions. First my stuttering severity. I guess it depends on who you ask. When I briefly went to a few months of therapy about 3-4 years ago my stuttering was determined to be severe. This was based on the number of disfluencies per word or syllable (however they were counting them). However I would have classified myself as mild-to-moderate. It really didn't hold me back at this point in my life - I pretty much barged ahead despite my stuttering, without looking back. Looking back to my youth I'd probably classify it the same way - mild to moderate, but it was likely severe in the clinical sense. My stuttering has always been worse when reading aloud, opposed to casual conversation. Reading aloud remains my most disfluent circumstance. New people were difficult for me in the past, as were high stress situations like talking to someone I viewed as very important. Yes, stuttering did affect my participation in school - I didn't ask nearly as many questions (or offer to answer as many questions) as I would have liked to. I don't think it really hindered my performance though, I was fairly successful in school. To your last question - No, I was never referred to speech therapy in middle or high school. I don't know why - maybe we didn't have an SLP that was available. It never came up and I didn't make an effort to find out. Thanks! Joe
