Hi Sarah! You're actually asking a pretty tough question. For some detailed information and a nice review of theories concerning DAF & other AAF modes, I would best direct you to some of the books listed in the reference section of the paper (such as Van Riper's "Treatment of Stuttering" and Marcel Wingate's two books). Additionally, some of the papers by Peter Howell and some by Joe Kalinowski and Andrew Stuart and their students and colleagues at East Carolina University (ECU), among others, will also yield some excellent summary information. Indeed, both Howell and the ECU group have published several reseach papers in the last 10 years on altered auditory feedback that have centered on proving or disproving several of the theories. The short answer is that we have several speculative theories about what DAF actually does to promote a more fluent speaking pattern, but still do not have the definitive answer.
