I don't believe that viewing stuttering as an Iceberg (Sheehan, 1970)is a theory, simply a description of stuttering as a complex and multi-layered phenonenon. Articles in Letting GO (NSA) have also portrayed the experience of stuttering as an onion, again with many layers. I suspect that most people in the field, in particular clinicians and clinical researchers, believe such analogies to be a reasonable way to view stuttering. They key point, of course, is that what you see (and hear) is only a portion (sometimes a relatively small portion) of the overall experience FROM THE SPEAKER'S PERSPECTIVE. It's often critical that the factors under the surface are considered during assessment and also as indicators of progress during therapeutic or nontherapeutic change.
