Hello, Today I heard myself say that stuttering was all about reactions to the laryngeal block. I was talking with the mom of a 3rd grader. This mother knows much about stuttering and challenges me with thoughtful questions. Today, her son explained that lately he gets stuck on /h/ words. He demonstrated what I interpreted to be a block in which he exhaled air but made no sound. This is how we got into the conversation of blocks vs repetitions, prolongations, secondaries and emotional reactions. Back to my question. Where did I get this idea that all physical and emotional componants originate in a person's reaction to the laryngeal block and attempts to speak when the vocal cords refuse? Should I be saying that the other behaviors occur in conjunction with - not as a result of - the block? Can you give me a few references on this issue that I can access and that this mom could read? Thank you.
