Hi Ben. Stuttering modification is a treatment approach based in large measure on desensitization and easy stuttering. It involves goals such as decreasing avoidance behaviors and speaking in situations outside your normal comfort zone. The idea is that, because stuttering is not curable, it is best managed in a way that lifts the shame, embarrassment, and other barriers to effective communication. That is, if clients are going to speak, they are going to stutter; and since they are going to stutter, they may as well become desensitized to it and assume some control over HOW they stutter. There’s a lot more to it than that, but hopefully this gives you an idea. Dale
