Good article Bob. I agree with everything you say. I only wish I’d seen it before writing mine—I could have added a few things, e.g., Those less interested in empathy for those they’re supposed to be helping than in gathering data for limited treatment goals would...I don’t know—maybe I could get the physician from my essay to perform a delicate procedure of some sort. For those wondering what I mean by “limited treatment goals,” I’ll tell you that I’m thinking about a recent discussion on this topic that included someone Bob might as well have been writing about. The discussion essentially amounted to the following: “You have to go with what’s supported by evidence. It’s not enough to say, ‘I know what’s best. Trust me.’” Fair enough, say the listeners. But why is frequency of stuttering the only thing you’re measuring? “I know what’s best. Trust me.” In any case, thanks for another provocative essay. Dale
