Hi John: Thanks for the comments. I agree with what you say about the definitions of EBP. My essay is directed toward those who choose to define EBP and "evidence" much more narrowly and say, in essence, that surface fluency is the only thing that matters. I would say that most SLPs already possess empathy so chances are that those who are trying to define EPB narrowly are not going to be successful in setting the agenda for stuttering treatment in the long run. However, the treatments they espouse - focusing on fluency and promising "normal fluency" relatively quickly - also have a lot of appeal to SLPs who are uncomfortable or inexperienced working with stuttering. And, unfortunately, they have a lot of appeal for at least some SLPs who don't understand what it is like to stutter. My essay is just an attempt to figure out why it is so hard for some people (a minority, I believe - and hope) to understand what people who stutter go through. I hope this helps.
