Bob, Thanks for a clear and thoughtful presentation of the importance of both empathy and evidence informing our practice with clients who stutter. As an instructor in the field, I believe that I have an obligation to help my students discover what it means for empathy to be a factor in both assessment and treatment. When I was in school, some several eons ago, I do not remember being presented with the idea that empathy was critical to practice, and so had to figure it out on my own. Or, perhaps it was presented, but I was too inexperienced to hear it, and ended up having to figure it out on my own. At any rate, I now see it is an essential part of practice and hope to impart at least the beginnings of what you so perfectly termed "empathy-based practice" to them. I'll be quoting you soon! Your article goes a long way toward disseminating this important concept to a broader audience. Regards, Lynne
