Hi Ty: I'm not opposed to science, but I think that in the field of communication disorders, where we are dealing with people, we have to be careful not to adopt "too" scientific a stance. Or perhaps, we have to be careful not to pretend that what is true for the physical sciences can be readily applied to human behavior. I agree that dealing with listeners is often difficult. As I have pointed out in other ISAD essays, if SLPs can't "get it" when it comes to stuttering, it's hard to imagine how the person on the street can be expected to get it. We have a lot of educating to do, both within and outside of our profession. Best Wishes, Bob Q.
