Hi Simone: I agree that at this point what is probably the more interesting area of study is those who do not respond to treatment. There is a big difference between a treatment working for "most" vs. "all" and it seems that some folks want to ignore the "few" for whom treatments do not seem to work. It is much easier to say "they did it wrong" or "it was applied incorrectly" than it is to really investigate why the *treatment* failed to work. I recently completed an article with Dr. Scott Yaruss from the University of Pittsburgh in which we discussed the development of outcomes scales for people who stutter - the Overall Assessment of the Speaker's Experience of Stuttering (OASES). The OASES attempts to examine the "under the surfact" aspects of stuttering to determine the impact of stuttering. The OASES isn't a treatment, but rather an assessment. However, it is the type of assessment we need if we are going to have "evidence" for things other than surface fluency. I hope this helps. Best Wishes, Bob Q.
