You make an important point. If all people responded to treatment in the same way, we could say that the disorder and the person are one and the same, but that just isn't the case. That's why some flexibility is necessary in treatment delivery. Regarding treatments that are "well tolerated" - again, there is individual variability involved, but I find that things that make stuttering less mysterious - learning about talking, exploring stuttering, "staying in the block" often have value. These help to desensitize the client as well as make him or her more knowledgable about his or her stuttering. Once the child does not feel that stuttering is horrible, it is easier to shape speech. Of course, for very young children, operant techniques have been shown to be very effective. I hope this helps. Bob Q.
