Colleen, thanks so much for your questions. You ask, “Do you think gender seems to have an effect on the desensitization processes?” Generally speaking, I think it really depends on the person and how ready he or she is to make significant changes. Having said that, I have noticed that at some of the self-help meetings and conferences it seems that there are a greater number of women attending than one might expect. When I was a regular member at the Manhattan stuttering group’s self-help meetings there would occasionally be as many women attending as men. As we all know, the research shows that males outnumber female stutterers about three or four to one. I am curious if nationwide there is a higher percentage of women attending self-help meetings than is represented in the overall stuttering population.
