Yes, one of the goals of voluntary stuttering is to practice stuttering on specific sounds. You ask, “Does this take a lot of practice?” As Starkweather and Givens-Ackerman (1997) have noted, speaking strategies are the hardest to use when they are needed the most. As with any speaking strategy, the stutterer has to remind him or herself to use the tool when it is needed. If the goal is to stutter voluntarily on feared sounds (such as “m” or “s”), the stutterer has to remember to do so.
