Thanks for your comments Esther. Counseling clients to understand that stuttering is allowed is important. But understanding, cognitively, that stuttering is okay is much different than feeling it. Voluntary stuttering helps the speaker feel that stuttering is truly allowed. Telling a client that stuttering is acceptable is much different from the client earning it for him or herself. I support counseling, and I recognize that talking about stuttering in an open manner is difficult for many clients. But after you have started the counseling process, it is my opinion that much more challenging tasks await.
