Peter – Thanks for the enjoyable article, it was truly insightful! It seems to me that PWS usually have trouble with a certain set of consonants (/t/ or /d/ or /s/ for example), and in being aware of that, they may try to avoid using words that begin with those consonants in order to avoid stuttering. Voluntary stuttering seems to make sense as an effective therapy tool as it enables the PWS to overcome those ‘frightening words’ that they try to stay away from in order to avoid stuttering. By your own experience, does this method only work with people who are open and unashamed about their stuttering and willing to use any method to ameliorate their communicative skills? What about PWS who may be a bit afraid already about public opinion in regards to their stuttering? Would they be good candidates for this type of treatment? Finally, have you ever had an instance where the voluntary stuttering led to an increased rate of real stuttering?
