I am graduate student at Kean University in NJ and have limited experience with persons who stutter and the topic of stuttering. However, one concept that seems to be a resounding theme for those who will encounter persons who stutter in their practices seems to be counseling the client on his/her emotions. I think this paper does a nice job of alerting readers to the idea that the behaviors observed with stuttering are indelibly linked to the individuals feelings towards their stuttering. I think that this paper could even be used as a part of educating clients as it is easy to read and understand. My question is this: How direct should a clinician be with a client that you are treating for stuttering about getting them to disclose their feelings? Most individuals who harbor strong negative feelings about themselves are not so willing to open up about them. I don't know how comfortable I would feel making someone else uncomfortable about such a touchy subject.
