Anita, I see that you have not got a response so far, so I will just make a couple of brief comments. The "iceberg" theory is not exactly testable using traditional research methodology. The concept is, I think, more of a metaphor than a theory. Anyway, I think that most researchers and clinicians believe that there is much more to stuttering than meets the eye. That is, the phenomenology of stuttering has an underlayment of neurological, genetic, social and psychological elements that ARE the subjects of research. Therefore, I do not think the concept is actually dead, just somewhat transformed in view of understanding that is more recent.
