Your assumption is correct. I would apply a direct treatment for preschool children as well as school aged. In the Lidcombe Program, which is my best practice, the parents are trained to apply direct verbal feedback in structured and unstructured conversations with their children, for fluency and stuttering. There is considerable outcome data to support the use of this type of program and I am quite comfortable with it. I would use this program with a 3 year old if it were appropriate to intervene at that early age. I think it is appropriate for children at least 8+ to be involved in some decision making re treatment but have given that option to some children as young as 6. These decisions are related to questions like " What do you want your mother to say/do when you are fluent?" Your question is a good one...I am not sure that I can give you the answers that you are looking for in such a brief forum. Keep asking good questions.
