I find it difficult to conceptualize behavioral treatment for stuttering being totally successful without some support from the child's environment. Even adolescents and adults report better outcomes when there is a sympathetic/empathic/ supportive environment. The speech pathologist is the person who helps the child to achieve stutter free speech in the clinic but the difficult issues are related to generalization from in clinic to beyond clinic settings. I think it is crucial to long term success that there is some support network for each child. What that might consist of or how much is needed might be an individual option.
