Adriana, at the meeting you might want to mention that we all experience shenpa. Whenever we react habitually to a feeling of unease or discomfort by "tuning out," taking a drink, lighting a cigarette, making a phone call just to engage in idle speech, snacking, turning on or off the television set, having compulsive sex, yelling agressively at those close to us, etc., etc., etc., we are in the process of being hooked by "shenpa" and "scratching." Recognizing this does at least two things: 1) It helps us realize as human beings we are all in the same boat whether we have a stuttering problem or not, and that is a good thing to recall and 2) It can become a starting place for working on the shenpa of stuttering. In fact, I have what might be called a general shenpa practice. I am committed to constructively addressing whatever shenpa I experience not just what seems to be tied in with stuttering. // I wish I could be there during the discussion. // Best wishes, Ellen-Marie Silverman
