Good question, Alexis. People who’ve written on this subject have noted that a lot of teaching can be done in everyday conversations, with simple statements such as, “Please don’t finish my sentences,” or “Just so you know, telling me to ‘slow down’ doesn’t help.” Also, since outfits that employ customer service-type personnel aren’t eager to lose business, talking to a manager can help. One year a student of mine did her pseudostuttering assignment while ordering a pizza over the telephone. The person at the pizza place mimicked her (fake) stutter. The student got so angry that she called back and talked to the manager, who was not only apologetic (and promised to talk to all of the employees, which addresses your question), but he also gave her the pizza free of charge (which addresses a separate question of what to do if you’re ever hungry for pizza but short on cash). I hope this helps. Dale
