I think the speech pathologist in a school needs to be truly empathetic and see the situation through the child's eyes. Even being called out of class can be a trauma in itself. That act alone can make the child feel different and alone. I also think family needs to be consulted. My family knew what was going on at school only when I offered it. The therapy should touch all aspects of the child's experiences they are having, not just during the half hour speech session or just in school. For instance, it would have helped if I did not have to hide my stuttering from people like my cousins. I saw them on vacations. I wish you the best in working with these children. Thanks, Barb
