I do not feel that anyone should step outside of who they truly are to be accepted by the world. The problem is really with the way stutterers are perceived. That is what makes anyone avoid any behavior that is not accepted by everyone else. It is an incredibly strong behavior modification tool. Becoming covert takes a huge amount of energy and is probably not a healthy alternative overall. The fear, anxiety, guilt and shame that result is jut too hard. I am trying not to be as covert as I once was and I am also trying to talk about it more than i ever have. I think this is a very healthy way for me to be dealing with this now. Thanks, Barb
