Sharing has been the key word for me. With family, chatgroups, the self-help movement, but what gave me the most was my first project to talk to school children. They ask personal questions and expect you to answer them, but they also ask simple questions like "Do you also stutter when yoy play the saxophone?" And they fight over who I should sit next to during lunch and ask for my autograph. I cried rivers during the project I had, as it brought up memories I had pushed away for years but bringing them up helped me to deal with them and move on. Today, 10 years later, I still talk in schools (and to politicians, SLPs, congresses, media) and I'm proud of who I am. I still hate my stutter, but I'm no longer spending my time and energy hiding it and feeling ashamed for it. It's not my fault, so why the shame? I learned to deal with my emotions and to desensitize and others learn about stuttering. A perfect deal!
