Alan, I am a graduate student in SLP from Wisconsin, USA. I wanted to thank you for sharing your experience with all of us. I think that it is a great concept for all of us practicing or future SLPs to take into consideration. Systems such as the Edinburgh Masker can aid us in many ways, but should definitely not be used as a quick fix. In a day when the technologies we have at our fingertips are endless, it was interesting that you pointed out so many different avoidance strategies I never would have though of, such as text messaging or email. I think that it is inspiring for all who have read your article to know that stuttering does not have to hinder their life. Out of curiosity, since you have become more pro-active in your speaking with others, do you find that you have less difficulty saying what you like? You had commented that you had thought of 13 letters of the alphabet as being out of your ‘scope,’ but since you have stopped avoiding, and forced yourself to say what you like, have you noticed less tendency to want to avoid? Thank you so much for the information that you shared!
