Mr. Bates, I really enjoyed reading your article. These points that Gallwey has made about the "Inner Game" are so relevant for life, since life really is just that... an inner game. I'm inspired to go out and buy his book. I'm a CDS grad student, and recently did some research on counseling in stuttering therapy. One of the objectives was to focus on communication as the main goal, not just fluency. Your goal of "unrestrained self-expression" reminded me of this. When the goal is fluency, perhaps this is as Gallwey states, "too much technical instruction on how to avoid errors." When the goal is communication, on the other hand, this is more like "trusting our natural ability." Very inspiring article... thanks so much.
