Hi Anita, I am a graduate student at the College of Saint Rose in Albany, NY. I will graduate in August with a Master's Degree in Communication Disorders. I really enjoyed reading your article. I liked how you wrote that we need to focus on the “whole person” and not just stuttering. Both my graduate and undergraduate experiences have focused on the “whole person approach” and I completely agree with it. We need to focus on all aspects of the person’s life. I feel as though more professions, as well as even people within the field of communication disorders need to focus more on the whole person. I believe each individual person views stuttering differently, and like you said, some people do view it as a disability while others do not. It really depends on the individual person’s views. We need to learn to be able to talk freely about stuttering in order to assist people with acknowledging stuttering and help them live their lives without being afraid to speak or live life to the fullest. Also, it was interesting to read about the ELSA meetings. It must be a great experience! Do you feel like it made a difference in changing perspectives about stuttering? Was it successful? Did you see a change in the way people were able to talk about their stuttering and express their feelings? Thank you, Katie Borek
