You ask "In the sense of it interferring with peoples lives, perhaps we need do need to label stuttering a disability. But in terms of overcoming it on a personal level do you think labeling one's self as disabled may make it harder for a person?" It depends on where you are and the needs you have. I'm ok with myself and the life I lead. I stutter and won't let anyone stop me from talking. On the other hand it is a problem when looking for a new job, as I need to be better than all others to be able to compete. So I consider myself disabled in some situations, for ex working situations, where people don't see me for who I am and don't see my capacities, but not among friends and family nor in the job I have today where I'm accepted, ackowledged and appreciated for who I am and what I do. And I wouldn't have this job (in school) if I hadn't received the scholorship to go back to school, because of me checking the disability box... Anita
