A stigma is always cause by ignorance. So, once again, we need to tell the truth, coming from us, therapists and researchers. There are a group of therapists who "adopt" a country and use some weeks of their time (voluntary!!!) to work in other countries where stuttering treatment is not so well developed. We are afraid of things we don't understand. People were afraid to travel, as they might fall off the earth. Some people still think stuttering is contagious. And in other countries stuttering simply not being seen as a problem. "Every stutters once in a while", without ackowledging that stuttering is not simply a repetition, but a complex problem, which can cause physical, mental and social problems if not being ackowledged or treated. So once again: Keep talking!!! Anita I just wonder what factors in a society could cause its members to view stuttering as a disability and why it would not be considered one in another.
