Hi Sarah: Great question. You are correct when you say that assessment is a challenge! There are many possible assessment tools available for assessing the affective, behavioral, and cognitive aspects of stuttering. At the moment there is not one tool that does the "whole job" of assessing all aspects of stuttering. In my lab, we have been using measures commonly used in stuttering assessment outside of VR (e.g., SSI-3, %SS, S-24, OASES), and some measures from the public speaking literature (self ratings of speaking apprehension, confidence, and competence) to assess performance in VR. We also use a couple of VR-specific assessments, to insure that people are sufficiently "immersed" in the virtual environment. If you are interested in seeing descriptions of a variety of assessment tools for stuttering, take a look at Blomgren et al (2005) article in Journal of Speech, Language and Hearing Research. These authors looked at the SSMP program for PWS, and used a variety of measures to document change in treatment. Shelley
