Hi Rachel. My graduate training included implementing self-monitoring as a basic principle of stuttering therapy. Self-charting improves the client's ability to understand what tools are, when they are using them, and if they like how they sound and feel. I think that this strategy is very beneficial in helping children feel better about themselves and their ability to make speech change. Some references in the article speak to research focused in this area. It is very important that I communicate to children that I can't tell them the best way for them to "talk", but rather we can explore together ways to change tension and manipulate the "speech machine". They need to know how it feels to do that so that they can make the best choices about speaking.
