Hi Chris, I try and begin the self-monitoring process "outside of therapy" immediately. If the child engaged in a task in the therapy setting, such as naming words with easier onsets and eye contact successfully (8/10 responses), then we may set up a "Contract Card". A Contract Card is written on a 3X5 notecard (or whatever) and includes a goal as well as a place to respond which is called "check for agreement." Here is an example: Goal: Sam will say 5 science words with his teacher using easier beginnings and eye contact." Check for Agreement: (Here Sam and his teacher briefly talk about what just happened in communication. His teacher asks him if he liked his easier beginnings and eye contact, etc. We also may send a card of this nature home. We utilize this strategy repeatedly in various environments with various people. The task is short and we only do it if we have had a conference with the others and taught them about what it is the child is working on. Children engage in these meeting with us and do the teaching. The level of proficiency we use is usually 8/10 responses (or 9/10). Best of luck!
