Dear Connie: I am a practicing SLP in an elementary school but I have recently returned to graduate school for some "updating" in stuttering, an area in which I have never felt totally comfortable. After reading your Inventory, I started using it with my stutterers whose school grades range from 1st through 3rd. All have some language problems as well. While it's only been a few sessions, the kids seem totally perplexed. Obviously, I had to read the Inventory to all of them. One talked more about witnessing teasing (about someone's hair!) but not one of the children mentioned being teased about their speech. With only half-hour sessions, I am wondering how persistent to be. Do you think there's a certain "emotional" vocabulary they need or do you think doing the Inventory intermittently, e.g., once a month, every few weeks, etc., has any value? Do you think I should be more blunt in my approach. I don't want to "make a problem" where one doesn't exist. Any additional thoughts would be very much appreciated.
