As to short term effect, there was still 5% ineffective rate. There are several situations among the 5%, some of them have low intelligence quotient IQ(below 80),some of them do not believe in the principle of the teacher, the last part of them are those can not keep on practicing and easy to give up. As to the long term effect( which is very important to stutterers), teacher Yao didn’t give exact numbers. I think the long term successful rate should be lower. In fact, after the 10 day program, the stutterers need to consolidate the treatment, improve the ability of speech, and keep practicing. Why teacher Yao stressed three year follow up? Because he found that most of the relapse occurred within three years. The long term effect and high incidence of relapse are still the problem faced by speech therapists across the world. We have begun to try an approach to combine the speech perspective and psychological perspective, together with regular activities of self-help groups. Please wait for the report of our improved long term effect in 2-3 years!
