Carla, << Tell me, do you know what percentage of known stutterers have fully recovered in early adulthood? >> I don't know. What I do know is that a certain percentage of people do recover, and simply move on with their life. Like the one photographer I met at a party several years ago who confided during a party that he had stuttered quite badly as a teenager. When I asked him how he recovered, he said, "I don't know, I just did." <<Next, how does that happen? For you, was it a slow transition, lots of therapy, lots of practice, or just lots of intentions?? I have an article on the Stuttering Home Page entitled, "How I recovered from chronic stuttering" that gives an overview of my recovery story. But quickly, it was a gradual process that took place over the course of 3-4 years. It was greatly facilitated by my intense participation in the personal growth movement that flourished for the first time in California in the 60s. I was heavily involved with that, and the self discoveries I made were truly powerful. Interestingly, I never really had any speech therapy, although what I figured out and tried on my own was very similar to various different brands of therapy. The advantage of NOT havingformal speech therapy was that I never became caught up in traditional thinking and ideas about stuttering, so I was free to make my own observations and go my own way. Being a good...and impartial...observer was very helpful. If you'd like to talk more about this off-line, my email address is stutterhexagon@aol.com. Regards, John
