Mr. Harrison- Thank you for your response and advice. We have explored the Stuttering Home Page site and find you are quite prolific in sharing yourself and ideas regarding therapy. We think your view is really on target! We also hope you live long enough to see the change happen! Our son's SLP has attempted to educate us. She is a nice person; but it is clear to us that she is well schooled in the idea's of fluency shaping and stuttering modification therapies. She always shares information she has received from professional workshops she has attended. She belongs to the NSA and has attended workshops for professionals working with children offered by the NSA professional staff. The handouts from the workshops she has attended reflect major emphasis on stuttering modification. Last week, she sent home literature from NSA "Stutter Buddies" (?) that amoungst other advice for when you talk to people who stutter, "help them become a better speaker and remind the person who stutters to slow down or take deep breaths." This does not sound like what you advise for a therapy. His therapist feels the suggestion is sound. We think it is dangerous to our son's self esteem. Is "Stutter Buddies" different than the NSA? Our son is steadfast against this idea. He is against therapy. We worry about him and how he feels about himself and his confidence. He is a good son and we want the best for him. The type of therapy he receives now defeats his spirit. If you were the parent of a son who stutters, would you allow yourself - or a son - to continue in this type of therapy? We have reviewed "The Professor is In" section of this ISAD, and have found the professionals largely endorse fluency shaping and stuttering modification therapies as most effective with children. They also say positive remarks about "Lidcome Therapy" (?) How can the mind set be changed? What can we do? It is an emotional issue for all of us. Thank you in advance for any suggestions you may have.
