Hi, Katie, One of the problems with the legal status of stuttering as a disability is that there is really very little case law. Bill Parry has a pretty complete description of this on his website. Most people do prefer to settle out of court, and I can't blame them; but the process of going through the procedure is to establish a legal train that can serve as the foundation for legal interpretations for later cases. The result is that the same kind of discrimination has to be litigated again and again. I don't have a solution, and I don't think anyone else does either. I hope some of the lawyers who read this page will add their comments! Lou Heite
