What a thought provoking paper. In particular the comment "Stuttering cuts across racial, ethnic, and economic boundaries with admirable evenhandedness. (Bloodstein, 1995)." jump started my thinking and has been rolling about in my head since the moment I read it. The second thing that stands out to me was the author's experiece at a conference where a german presentor pointed out media portrayal of people who stutter. As a society we often assign attributes to people as a whole based on some common characteristic. in this case, the perosn who stutters has now been cast as "rather soft, unattractive, frail, pinched, and subordinating. He might be a sexually deprived, possibly perverted man with pimples or nibbled fingernails who could be thinking about murdering somebody..."(Benecken, 1995) At what point do we stop this practice and when will we finally be able to educate enough people so that this practice is no longer appears or recieves attention? Thanks for a great article. So many issues to think about...
