Lou, I too was thoughtfully provoked by your article. I have never thought about all of the things that stutterers may be, all at once; opressed, stigmatized, pathologized, victimized, infantilized! I know that the few stutterers that I have worked with perceive some of these feelings to be true, and I can empathize with them. Do you know what is the percentage of "successful" PWS within the known stuttering population? I would imaging it's very small. And, what defines success? Many of those "successful" PWS had one or two other outstanding characteristics (that we are not all so lucky to have!). James Earl Jones, an unbelieveable voice, Marilyn Monroe, beauty, etc. Those are qualities that we (American people) have determined lead to success. But, so many more of us are just ordinary people, doing the best we can do with what resources we have. If we are ordinary, and a PWS's, it has to be much harder to achieve "perceived success", depending on our individual characteristics and personalities. Thanks for this interesting article!
