Absolutely. One can make the choice to be hampered or not by social and societal pressures. However, I am getting to be a pretty old person. I remember the same comments being made about African Americans in the early 1960's, then about women in the 1970's. When any individual is judged by group standards that demean the group to which that person is assigned, the entire society suffers. Oppression does not have to mean fear of knocks on the door in the night or even putting up with the limitations of a glass ceiling. Oppression can be very subtle, and still very effective.
