I think you're probably right on an individual basis. That does not remove the apparent societal prejudice, though. Scholarship in the psychology of oppression and prejudice has come up with several clear criteria for defining a subgroup of people as "oppressed", and it seems that people who stutter, as a whole, meet most or all of those criteria. There have always been members of otherwise stigmatized groups who somehow escaped the prejudice of the norm-setting dominant group. It's useful to study how those individuals managed to skirt the prejudicial thinking, and apply their skills, if they are not too idiosyncratic, to removing the stigma from others. Lou Heite
