Dear Russ, While I was reading your stories (I also read about the "iceberg")I had goosebumps!! And I agree with all of those that have posted comments/questions here. You are amazing, strong and tenacious. I applaud your successes and feel you are truly gifted!! I recently began a change of careers from nursing into SLP so I'm not very familiar with speech dysfluencies, particularly, stuttering. Although,I do have a sister-in-law who sustained a head injury from a car accident many years ago and now is a person who stutters. Also, a nephew that didn't speak until he was almost 5...now he doesn't shut up <smile>!! We learned in class that psychotherapy hasn't proven to "help" those who stutter. Your story about the "iceberg" signifies just how much "emotional baggage" we all carry around and I can understand how difficult it must be for people who stutter. I would like you to comment on the role psychotherapy has played in your life and the effect it has had on your speech dysfluency, if any. What role, in general, do you feel psychotherapy should play in other people who stutter? Is it possible to be "released" from the inner suffering? I look forward to your views...thank you for your time. PS...also, thanks for the information on the Toastmasters. I have located a club in my area and will be contacting them to attend a meeting as a guest.
