Hi Russ! My name is Stephanie and I am a speech language pathology student going for my master's degree at NYU. I am also in Lee Caggiano's Fluecny Disorders class. I chose to read your article because several other students in my class and told me about how interesting and inspirational it was. Boy were they right! Before this class, I had never known much about stuttering. I never really knew anyone who stuttered. I knew it had to do with trouble getting words out clearly. Through my class at NYU and through your article, I have truly learned so much about stuttering. I've learned just how much stuttering can impact all aspects of a person's life, verbally, socially, emotionally, etc. I myself do not stutter and yet I too always hated to make speeches especially in front of large groups. I dreaded class presentations. The fact that you stutter but have the confidence to enter these speaking contests and give talks is remarkable. I had not heard of Toastmasters until now and I was wondering if you could tell me a little more about it. What kind of organization is it? What is the Toastmaster educational training program exactly? I am curious also as to why you said "there was no hope for me." Are you referring to the hope of being fluent someday? Also, before you were 10 years old and went to the speech correction camp, had you receiced any other speech therapy whether it be fluency shaping or stuttering modification? Or was the speech correction camp the first "intervention"? I decided to pursue a career in speech language pathology because I want to make a difference. I want to touch people's lives like you have. I have a collection of inspirational sayings, poems, and articles that I keep. Your article has been added to my collection! The fact that you view your stuttering as a gift is truly inspirational. I am sure that you have opened doors for many people and will continue to do so for many years to come.
