Hi Russ, I am a grad student in the Communication Sciences and Disorders program at the College of St.Rose. Your article provides inspiration and hope for all of us who experience obstacles in life. It truly proves the saying, “The glass is either half empty, or half full.” Since you chose to look at your stuttering as a “glass half full," your life has been forever changed because of it. This is an important lesson in life that should encourage us all to face our fears and turn negatives into positives. I have a few questions for you. You said that you don't think you ever experienced discrimination. However, do you think you are looking back at your younger years through rose colored glasses since stuttering has had a positive impact on your life in your adult years? For example, do you remember what it felt like to be a child who stuttered? Did other children pick on you at school? Also, do you resent the fact that stuttering was a taboo topic when you were younger? Do you wish it was an open topic that you could have discussed with others and if so, how do you think this would have changed your life? Finally, do you still use the fluency shaping techniques you learned while in "speech camp?"
