Hello Ursulla, ..... What a beautiful story! Your mother was very wise. Yes, the ability to accept gifts with graciousness is valuable not only to receiver but to the giver of the gifts themselves. Almost everyone loves to help other people and for that help to be received with gratitude is a gift in itself. ..... You said, "One may wonder if our needs and our "disabilities" are what bring us together and otherwise we may never have a reason to reach out of ourselves to others." Yes indeed, I believe that. That's the very essence of support groups. It's both the giving and receiving of help that makes those groups work. You put that wonderfully. ..... You asked, "What do you think is a good way for a non-stutterer to reach out to a person who does stutter?" One of the most valuable gifts in the world is the simple gift of friendship. And friendship means listening and sharing each other's lives. While you might think a client of yours is saying "Fix me" he's really saying "Be my friend and listen to what I have to say." ..... You're going to be a WONDERFUL SLP! As a future SLP, you'll have more opportunities to affect other people's lives than you can possibly imagine. The bad news is that you probably won't even hear about 99% of them. But the good news is that the 1% that you DO hear back from will make everything you do all worthwhile! ..... I wish you the best, Ursulla. I hope our paths cross some day. Thank YOU for your very insightful comments! ..... Russ, my email is russhicks@mail.com
