It is obvious that most incoming SLPs in the field and many current SLPs are not adequately prepared or educated in fluency disorders. But what is not totally obvious to me is what the individual or their educators (organizations) should do about it. Should national associations such as ASHA require more time of fluency? Should SLPs be required to take a certain # of CEUs related to fluency? Are students responsible for their lack of knowledge since they are taking the required courses for their degree? Overall, who should be responsible for making fluency more prominent in schools and in our field?
