I am a first year SLP graduate student and am currently taking a fluency course. I am one of very few students in my program that were lucky enough to have also taken an undergraduate course. It seems to be a common complaint that there is not an adequate amount training for SLP's coming into this field. Although I agree that many may be under-prepared, I can only encourage them to be pro-active. Until graduate programs see the need to increase course work and clinical clock hours for fluency, all we can do as students is take the initiative to do a little work on our own...read fluency journals, keep up on current research, request fluency patients for your clinical practicum, etc. As graduate students, our instructors will hopefully do their best to prepare us, the rest is up to the individual!
