It is extremely disheartening to see that most clinicians feel the least competent in fluency disorders since it is essential for SLP’s to feel proficient, and capable with every client that may walk through the door. However, having had an undergraduate course in fluency, and currently taking the graduate fluency course, I can understand why we are graduating without feeling completely comfortable. It is extremely difficult to find fluency clients, let alone be their clinician. Not to mention, two classes in fluency is hardly sufficient. Also, because there is no “cure” for stuttering, I believe we feel intimidated and incapable of doing successful therapy. How can we become comfortable? What workshops are there available to us as graduate clinicians? Will we ever feel competent with fluency if we haven’t personally dealt with stuttering?
