Hello, I am a graduate student from the College of Saint Rose in Albany, NY. I would like to comment on your research article pertaining to preparing the clinician to treat stuttering. I agree with your results stating that indeed typical programs do not have adequate support for this area of Communication Disorders. Fluency is an area of strenth at Saint Rose and I feel very fortunate to have Sister Charleen Bloom and Dr. Donna Cooperman as professors. I have been working as a Teacher of the Speech and Hearing Handicapped for 11 years now. In a couple months I have learned more in the field of fluency than I have in extended workshops over the last 11 years. I feel fortunate our program has a concentration in this field along with practica and an intense weekend workshop. Fluency is an area of trepidation because of my lack of experience. I feel as if SLPs tend to stay away from this field because it does extend beyond a simple therapy method. Individualized therapy is so much more critical because of the attitudes and environment that also effect the speech concerns. I hope through my graduate studies I am able to help my school district expand their philosophy and education on fluency therapy. Thanks for the article to provide an important view of how graduate programs should rise to the occasion and provide this for their students.
